Trees are nature's air purifiers. Through the process of photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The 500 trees planted by our store are collectively absorbing a significant amount of carbon dioxide, contributing to cleaner, fresher air. This not only benefits the local ecosystem but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change.
Forests are vital hubs for biodiversity. By planting trees, we are not only helping to restore natural habitats but also creating new ones. Birds, insects, and other wildlife find refuge in these green havens, fostering a more balanced and resilient ecosystem. The ripple effect of increased biodiversity extends beyond the planted areas, positively influencing the surrounding environment.
Trees play a crucial role in maintaining soil health. Their roots prevent erosion, stabilize the soil, and enhance its fertility. Additionally, trees act as natural water filters, reducing the risk of water pollution. The 500 trees planted by our store contribute to the overall health of the land, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and safeguarding water resources.
Beyond the environmental impact, our tree-planting initiative has sparked a sense of community engagement and environmental awareness. Customers are not just purchasing furniture; they are investing in a sustainable future. The act of planting a tree with each sale creates a tangible connection between our business and our customers, fostering a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.
The positive impact of planting trees extends beyond the ecological sphere; it also has economic benefits. Trees contribute to the overall value of the land, enhance property aesthetics, and, in some cases, even increase property values. As the planted trees mature, they can potentially become a sustainable source of timber or other forest products, offering economic opportunities for future generations.
As we reflect on the journey of planting 500 trees, it becomes evident that small actions can yield significant positive outcomes. Our cane furniture store's commitment to sustainability goes beyond selling products; it's about weaving a greener, healthier future for our planet. Through the simple act of planting trees, we are nurturing a legacy of environmental responsibility, one that extends its roots deep into the soil and reaches for the sky, providing shade and sustenance for generations to come. Thank you for being part of this transformative journey toward a more sustainable and harmonious world.

]]>Premier Cane Furniture turns 20 years old this April 2022 and what a rollercoaster ride it has been, operating through the financial crisis in 2008, 5 Prime Ministers and a global pandemic. Here's a timeline of key events that have shaped the company over the last 20 years.
March 2002 was spent making leaflets and dressing the showroom in preparation for our official opening day on Good Friday which fell on the 1st of April 2002. On the morning of April fools day, we turned our closed sign to open and so began our journey, situated in the heart of Melton Mowbray, a historic town renown for its pork pies and stilton cheese. Here's an image of how we first set up in 2002:
Trading under the name 'Premier Cane & Crafts', founder, Mark Wheeler had transferred his 20 years of industry knowledge to his own business, focused on bringing environmentally friendly products to a larger market. Ellie focused on design and crafts, utilising the showroom's space in the most efficient way possible. Our time at Church Street had many highs and lows but it will always have a place in our hearts for where our journey began.
Exactly 6 years to the day after founding the business, we decided to move to a larger space on the outskirts of Melton. The new environment came with a host of challenges with most of the struggles you would expect operating in a large greenhouse. Summers were hot and winters were cold but the new area came with much better access for large vehicles and double the space. The additional space allowed us to sell Christmas trees which became an annual event for the company. With the additional space, we decide to take on our first full range of outdoor garden furniture and since 2010 we have built a strong reputation in the high-quality outdoor furniture market.
The greenhouse allowed us to grow our physical presence and take the business online. www.premier-cane.co.uk was a primitive site back then but over the years it has grown into one of the largest collections of natural cane and rattan furniture on the internet. Our online store allowed more customers to find our business which allowed us to go on the hunt for a warehouse with more space, better infrastructure and less glass!
The third time's a charm, moving into our current premises was a huge step for Premier Cane, better connections for customers and purpose-built offices increased productivity and growth. In 2016 we took on Drew as an apprentice to grow the website and expand the business digitally. In 2018 we had everything in place to begin importing, starting with conservatory furniture and then garden furniture the following year. With connections to Indonesia and China, we now have over 25 exclusive indoor and outdoor ranges, not bad for a company with only three full-time members of staff.
In 2021 we signed an agreement to donate the cost of planting a tree for every sale, which includes all online and in store orders. In less than one year we have collectively been able to donate hundreds of trees, for more information on our 'tree promise' and to see how many trees we have planted click here: Premier Cane Furniture X Just One TREE
We have come a long way since 2002 but nothing would have been possible without the support we have had over the years, we would like to say thank you to all those who have helped us through the years, our customers and our suppliers. Here's to another 20 years.
Ellie, Mark & Drew
]]>
Our natural conservatory furniture is already made out a fast growing super plant that grows in Indonesia. All of our indoor cane and rattan products are made out of a natural cane plant which can take between 3-5 years to grow, rather than the traditional oak tree which can take 20 years to mature. This difference in harvesting time is what makes cane and rattan so sustainable as growth can match demand whilst slower growing hardwoods can not.
But that is not enough! More trees are still being chopped down than planted globally (by a lot) so we have decided to donate the cost of planting a tree for every Premier Cane Furniture sale, and that's across all ranges and all order sizes. Our pledge is just another step we are taking to give back to the planet and we are excited to see our partnership grow for the considerable future.
Trees are carbon sinks, absorbing the pollutants we humans put into the atmosphere. They clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, prevent soil erosion and flooding, give life to the world's wildlife, house complex ecosystems, supply us with medicine and provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people. They really are the superheroes of the planet and we need them in order to survive.
JUST ONE Tree is a non-profit organisation supporting reforestation projects around the world. They combat climate change through planting trees and in the process they help provide training, agricultural education and sustainable incomes in poverty stricken areas. Simultaneously improving livelihoods whilst tackling our climate crisis.
Supported by an awesome team, sprinkled liberally with passion and drive, JUST ONE Tree has seen almost 1.4 million trees planted. Reforesting 508 acres of land across 4 continents - equivalent to restoring an area the size of Monaco.
If you have any questions or queries please feel free to leave a comment or email one of our team members.
As of September 2022 we are proud to announce we have donated 517 trees to 'Just One TREE' which is helping to remove over 6.39 tonnes of CO2 every year.

With the extended 2 week local lockdown in Leicestershire, we will be increasing our measures to ensure all safety standards are being met for our customers. Fortunately being located outside of the Leicester lockdown area has allowed us to operate under national rules. We are however going to step up our use of 'appointment-based' visitors to our showroom and enforce a more strict social distancing policy. To book an appointment at our showroom email or call us on 01163192140.
With the latest developments on the Covid-19 restrictions, we at Premier Cane Furniture have decided to continue with our appointment-based system for any customers who wish to have a fixed time slot. Appointments will be prioritised over spontaneous public visitors, to ensure you get a time/date to view our showroom please feel free to give us a call on 0116 3192140.
With the latest developments on the Covid-19 restriction being loosened, we have decided to continue our appointment-based system for any customers who wish to visit our showroom. We believe at this current stage it is in our customers best interests to book an appointment to help reduce contact as much as possible. Our entire showroom has been strictly disinfected and hand sanitisers are available at the entrance. An update will follow this post as/when we decide to remove the appointment system.
After the latest government announcements, we have decided to open the showroom on an exclusive appointment-only basis until the government loosen restrictions (expected to be June 1st). Please call 01163192140 for more information.

Having a naturally low footfall in our Leicestershire showroom makes us a low risk area, however, we are looking at changing our showroom visits to appointments only to ensure we can allow for social distancing which is a key recommendation from the latest government announcement.

Weaving has been apart of human crafting for thousands of years with archaeologists dating a weaved item to the ancient Egyptians over 10’000 years ago. This love for weaving materials has been discovered on every populated continent and is a practice that is still enjoyed today. Vines are weaved into rattan sections to be used on a range of products. Often combined with natural cane frames, furniture made from these materials are 100% natural and are super strong. Cane plantations have been known to grow through concrete and displace sidewalk slabs. These super hard natural materials must take an age to grow though, right? No, cane and rattan vines grow at a staggering pace taking only a couple of years to be harvested. Of course, harvesting the vines must be done sustainably as premature harvesting can be a problem to the ecosystem.
FACT: When we said our frames are 100% natural, we meant it, our binding is made using the skin of the cane which is stripped and used to finish our furniture. (No leather here!)
As one of the world strongest and fastest-growing plants, it’s no surprise why it is the preferred choice of furniture for a conservatory or orangery. Grown in intense rainforest heat, the porous structure is designed for extreme weather and the durability to grow through dense jungle makes the material super strong (perfect for structural furniture). For more information on sustainable rattan harvesting check out what WWF has to say. https://greatermekong.panda.org/our_solutions/projects/sustainablerattan/factsinformation/
]]>Scatter Cushions
Is your furniture looking tired? A conservatory can be a hostile setting for furniture, with high temperatures in the summer and chiller conditions in the winter. Naturally, this can take its toll on anything that in the room and furniture is no exception, but before chucking anything out consider purchasing some fresh scatter cushions. There are no rules when choosing new scatter cushions, with thousands of materials colours and styles, choose a style that suits you.
Note: Pet owners may want to take more take when choosing a material as a loser woven fabric may be a claw disaster.

Accessorise or ‘de-ccessorise’
A common conservatory problem is either having an empty conservatory that feels cold and impersonal or a crowded mess of a conservatory that is a headache, with the optimal spot being in the middle of the two, here is all you need to know about filling your space. You need to balance style with functionality, having a stylish space is great but remember the goal is to make a space to enjoy (not to look like a showroom image). For those with excess space to fill here are some ideas on how to accessorise your conservatory.
Side/Coffee Tables & Console Units
Depending on the size of the empty space having a table is both functional and can look great. See if there is a table in the same range as your sofa and armchairs, if there are none available then there are a wide selection of tables that you can match up online. Alternatively, for those with even more space a console unit can be dressed with plants, candles and pictures frames making it the perfect piece of furniture for you to personalise and make your own. Baskets & Rugs
Looking for something more natural? How about a rattan basket perfect for storing blankets, logs or anything your mind can come up with. Large rattan baskets are durable, hardwearing, and fashionable. With a global shift towards environmentally friendly products, rattan baskets have seen a resurgence in the last year with a younger audience.
The final piece of the puzzle to tie everything together is a good rug. Rugs can come in all shapes, sizes and colours so finding the right one can take some time. But it will be time well spent when you find the perfect match. Tip: Look to purchase a rubber mat to stop the rug from sliding on hardwood floor.
The image below shows how to use these three tips to your advantage to make your conservatory a stylish yet comfortable place for you and your family to enjoy. Images courtesy of Daro Furniture available at Premier Cane Furniture.
]]>No matter how weatherproof the garden furniture is the great outdoors will take its toll on your rattan garden furniture, moss and dirt will build up over time, if not covered over winter you will may also see fading, bird excrement (especially if left under a tree) and other creepy crawlies. All but one of these problems can be solved with a simple hose down, the waterproof material is easy to clean with a pressurized hose, cushions should have been stored over the winter and a simple wipe down with soapy water will freshen them up. Different tabletop materials will require different care maintenance, some wooden effect polly-tops may need a special solution (ask the company you purchased from) and never use sandpaper. Glass tops will wipe down as expected as will granite tops, finish with polish and a dry rag.
Once cleaned get the set out in the sun and wait for the frames to dry, now pop the cushions on and your good to go.
Note: We would recommend considering an Aero Cover TM if you are looking for the best protection over the winter, the more you look after your furniture, the more years you'll get out of it. Covers can be found here AreoCovers.
Now the furniture is back at its best here are some ideas on how to dress the set to give it the wow factor. Accessorise, time to dress up the furniture to give it a personal touch, here are 5 simple idea on what you could use to take your furniture from drab to fab:

Finishing the month with the biggest news, January 30th we took in our biggest container to date, a 40ft high cubed beast full with our brand new and exclusive 2020 indoor conservatory range. Arriving after a month journey on the high seas sailing from Indonesia in December and arriving at Felixstow Port, UK in January. Another couple of days later our container touched down in Leicestershire. Once those container doors opened we realised just how big it was, a wall of cane squeezed in like a 3D jigsaw puzzle. It took a little over 2 hours to get the furniture offloaded and it took the rest of the day to find somewhere to put it! Needless to say we're going to be spending the better part of February trying to sort through it all. Pictures of the new stock & ranges will be on the February todo list and will be a feature in next months blog update. What we can tell you is we have had 5 new suites come in for 2020, including a new debut cane colour. Here are a collection of images from the loading day, a good indicator of size is to look at the 2 tiny head at the end of the container (that's Mark and John hard at work).
Stay up to date with our update's by subscribing to our Newsletter below and get a free £5 to spend on our website when you do so, or bookmark this page. We're going to try and do monthly updates for 2020 whenever there is something worth sharing, so keep an eye on that.

]]>This is a very common issue usually found in outdoor garden furniture where the weave has been unplaited. This problem can also occur with conservatory furniture, depending on the extent of the damage the repair is usually simple. For outdoor furniture the rattan should be more flexible which will make it easier to weave, there are plenty of videos that demonstrate how to weave a piece of rattan.
If repairing a conservatory cane weave you may also require some lacquer to ensure that the new piece of cane looks the same as the rest of the suite. Again this can be purchased online, make sure you choose a lacquer that is similar to your suites finish.
Spare strips of rattan can often be found under the chair, however, if you are having trouble finding any spare rattan strips there are plenty of places to buy the material online.
Staying with outdoor furniture it is a common problem for moss to form on the furniture during periods where the furniture is not being used, dirt and grit can also be found on the furniture. The moss and dirt can be removed by simply cleaning it off, a jet wash can be used on badly affected areas. To stop this from reoccurring it would be wise to invest in a cover for your furniture, this will stop any dirt getting to your furniture ensuring it stays looking as good as new.
Over time pets, children and everyday usage will take its toll on the furniture, the most common being scratches on the legs of conservatory chairs and sofas. This can be fixed fairly easily depending on the extent of the damage. Giving the furniture a light sand with low-grade sandpaper, beware if the sandpaper is too high a grade or if you sand for too long you will remove the lacquer on the furniture, this would then require lacquer to cover the affected areas. A light sand and polish should do the trick for indoor furniture however this should not be replicated for outdoor furniture as it will damage the material. For outdoor furniture go to shop you purchased from to get advice on that particular product.
Of course, we all want our furniture to look as good as possible for as long as possible and there are ways in which you can increase the longevity of your furniture by following these simple steps:
Have a unique problem not covered in this blog? Comment on this blog below or give us a call on 0116 319 2140. Please note we do not repair cane furniture, however, we will be able to give you expert advice on what your best plan of action is.
After many conversations in regards to where you can purchase the rattan strips from I thought I would update the blog to hopefully save time. The best place to look for the strips is on some kind of market place like eBay or an equivalence. Keep in mind that not all rattan is the same so look out for colour and material when searching on those market places. We don't provide any of these materials here at Premier Cane Furniture.
We do however manufacture furniture, which is why I will add an additional solution to the blog and that is if the quest for repairs is unreachable then feel free to have a look at our indoor conservatory furniture here: https://www.premier-cane.co.uk/collections/premier-cane-suites
]]>Who are we?
We're a family run business that was establish in 2002 by Mark Wheeler under the name of Premier Cane and Crafts. Mark had previously manufactured cane and rattan furniture from 1983 to 2001. He set up the shop on a narrow cobble street in Melton Mowbray and manned the shop for a couple of years whilst continuing his job as a mail man, eventually he was able to leave his job from the Royal Mail in 2005 to take on the shop full time.
We then moved to a new location in a greenhouse on a farm called Millhouse in late 2005. The new shop came with its fair share of problems due to it being a giant greenhouse it was freezing in the winter and too hot in the summer, this was not good for the furniture. Mark continued to manage the business by himself until 2007 when his wife Ellie wheeler decided to leave her job on the ambulance service to join Premier Cane Furniture full time. Ellie had always been a corner stone to the business from day one and had worked part time since the first opening day in 2002.
In 2014 we decided to relocate for the 3rd time to a unit in East Goscote and in 2016 Premier Cane Furniture decided to hire their first apprentice. This apprentice was Drew Wheeler, the eldest son of Mark and Ellie. Now we have got to the present day and if you managed to read that without getting bored to tears then brilliant you now know who we truly are.
What is our aim?
We aim to achieve extremely competitive prices whilst not compromising quality. We hand check ALL of our furniture and we personally deliver it to your door at no extra cost.
